Scale is caused by the accumulation of minerals in the boiler water which, if not removed, can cause localized overheating, reduced heat transfer efficiency, and in severe situations tube failure. If possible, hardness salts should be removed before they enter the boiler system and then treated inside the boiler with proper scale inhibitors.
